Earlier this year we received a number of reports from users that were unable to delete, move or rename documents on a new SMB file share. Eventually we were able to narrow it down enough to be able to consistently duplicate what they were seeing. It appears the SMB client in Mac OS X (10.11, 10.12 and possibly others) is overly aggressive with file locks. Below are suggested parameters to use in smb.conf file of the Samba server to improve operability with Mac OS X clients. Note that some parameters may not work with your version of Samba - read the smb.conf and vfsfruit man pages (on Linux) for your system. The open network attached storage solution. OpenMediaVault is the next. How to install SMBUp. Installing SMBUp is pretty simple, however configuration got me confused initially. SMBUp is a free application that replaces the Apple SMB implementation with the Open Source Samba version. I have tested this Mac OS X SMB Fix under Yosemite 10.10.2, with XMBC/Kodi as a client on an Android device, and it works great!

A free and open source and free utility that gives network administrators the freedom to setup, configure and use the desired system and equipment
Thanks to Samba you can gain access to SMB client that enables you to use PC printers and discs directly from your Mac. On top of that, Samba offers an extension for PC backup, as well as a tool that supports NT administrative functionality.
Samba is a handy open source and multi-platform utility that makes it easy for system and network administrators to easily setup, configure and use various systems and equipment.
Helps you gain access to print and file services
Samba delivers file and print services for different Microsoft Windows clients and it is capable to integrate with a Windows Server domain as a Primary Domain Controllers or as a domain member. The name comes from SMB, short for Server Message Block, the standard protocol used by the Microsoft Windows network file system.
The easy to configure Windows interoperability suite offers essential print and file services to CIFS and SMB clients, straightforward protocols for file and print sharing. Samba uses the TCP/IP protocol and enables the host to interact with a Windows server or client.
Enables you to access and use various servers with ease
Samba also offers a replacement for domain controllers and a reliable file and print server that acts as a member. Thanks to Samba you can gain access to SMB client that enables you to use PC printers and discs directly from your Mac.
On top of that, Samba offers an extension for PC backup, as well as a tool that supports NT administrative functionality. Consequently, Samba helps you with the migration process and supports the interoperability with Windows and other administration tools.
Quickly download and install Samba with a few command lines
In order to successfully compile Samba from source you first have to extract the contents of the downloaded archive, open a Terminal window, go to Samba’s folder and run the following commands from the command line:
./configuremakesudo make install
All things considered, Samba is a powerful albeit GUI-less free and open source suite designed from scratch to deliver seamless file and print services to SMB/CIFS clients.

Below are suggested parameters to use in smb.conf file of the Samba server to improve operability with Mac OS X clients.Note that some parameters may not work with your version of Samba - read the smb.conf and vfs_fruit man pages (on Linux) for your system.Other than those shown in the [TimeMachineBackup] share below, I recommend you include all parameters in the [Global] section of smb.conf. For ease of copy > paste, a clean smb.conf section is included at the bottom of this page.
Apple extensions ('AAPL') run under SMB2/3 protocol, make that the minimum (probably shouldn't be running SMB1 anyway...) - defaults to SMB2_2 in Samba 4.11+:
Apple extensions require support for extended attributes(xattr) - defaults to yes in Samba 4.9+:
Load in modules (order is critical!) and enable AAPL extensions:
How to store OS X metadata:
For additional setting see the manpage vfs_fruit.

For Spotlight backend indexing using Elastisearch (added in Samba 4.12):
See smb.conf for 4.12 for other Elastisearch parameters.Gnome tracker is still available (= tracker) or no indexing (= noindex), the default.
For Time Machine backup share (added in Samba 4.8):
As far as I know, testparm will not validate vfs_fruit parameters. (my server runs an old version of Samba :-), but after you have built your smb.conf, you can check for errors anyway with
#: testparm
or #: testparm -v
(which will give you the defaults as well. Here is the smb.conf code - NOTE - THIS IS NOT A COMPLETE SMB.CONF!!!
